A Guide to Providing Water for Wildlife
Providing water for wildlife during dry periods is generally considered beneficial without creating harmful dependency. It can be a great way to attract new birds to your yard and is a welcome treat to any of the many bees, insects and small (or large!) mammals passing through.
- Birdbaths, dishes or shallow saucers are commonly used and can be placed in various locations. Place some water sources on the ground for small mammals and others in trees or on pedestals for birds.
- Choose shady spots to prevent rapid evaporation and keep the water cool.
- Add rocks or sticks for insect access and use dishes no deeper than 2-3 inches to prevent small animals and bees from drowning.
- Clean and refill water containers daily. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals.
